Spine MRI Scan

Spine MRI Scan

A whole spine MRI scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and computer technology to create detailed images of your cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), and lumbar (lower back) spine. It allows clinicians to see the vertebrae, spinal cord, discs, nerves, and surrounding soft tissues in high detail.

What is Spine MRI scan?

What is Spine MRI scan?

A Spine MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to produce high resolution images of the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back) and lumbar (lower back) spine.

The scan clearly shows:

  • Vertebrae (spinal bones)

  • Intervertebral discs

  • Spinal cord and nerve roots

  • Joints and ligaments

  • Soft tissues

  • Surrounding muscles

MRI is particularly useful for identifying conditions that may not be visible on X-rays or CT scans.

Why have a Whole Spine MRI?

Your doctor or specialist may recommend a whole spine MRI if you are experiencing symptoms that affect multiple regions of your back or require a comprehensive assessment. Common reasons include:

  • Investigating causes of persistent back or neck pain
  • Assessing spinal cord compression or nerve issues
  • Detecting slipped discs, degeneration or arthritis
  • Evaluating scoliosis, curvature or structural changes
  • Screening for tumours, lesions or infection affecting the spine

Whole Spine MRI FAQs

Whether you can have a Spine MRI depends on the type of metal and where it is located. Many modern surgical implants are MRI-compatible, but some older devices or lodged metal fragments may make MRI unsafe. Our clinical team will review your medical history to determine suitability.

A Spine MRI can detect a wide range of conditions including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, nerve compression, degenerative disc disease, arthritis of the spine, spinal cord abnormalities, tumours, infections, inflammation and fractures that are not visible on X-rays. It can also assess complications after spinal surgery.

Your radiologist report and scan images will be available within 3–5 working days.

A whole spine MRI usually takes 30 minutes.

No GP referral is required. You can self-refer or book directly with us.

In some cases, contrast dye may be used for clearer imaging. This will be explained beforehand if needed.
