Prostate MRI Scan

Prostate MRI Scan

A prostate MRI scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses a strong magnetic field, radio waves, and advanced computer technology to create highly detailed pictures of the prostate gland and surrounding tissues. It is one of the most accurate ways to detect, assess, and monitor prostate conditions, including prostate cancer.

What is Prostate MRI scan?

Most prostate imaging today uses multiparametric MRI (mpMRI), which combines several imaging sequences to provide a highly accurate view of prostate anatomy and function. This technique helps radiologists distinguish between harmless conditions and clinically significant disease.

A prostate MRI scan is used to assess:

  • Prostate cancer (including early or hidden tumours)

  • Prostate enlargement (BPH)

  • Prostatitis or inflammation

  • Suspicious lesions following high PSA results

  • Post-biopsy abnormalities

  • Seminal vesicle issues

Prostate MRI is particularly valuable when blood tests such as PSA levels are raised or when previous scans have been inconclusive.

Why have a Prostate MRI?

A prostate MRI may be recommended if you:

  • Have a raised PSA level or abnormal blood test results
  • Require assessment before or after a prostate biopsy
  • Are being monitored for prostate cancer or other prostate conditions
  • Have urinary symptoms such as frequency, urgency or difficulty urinating
  • Need treatment planning for prostate-related conditions

Prostate MRI FAQs

It depends on the type of device or implant. Many modern pacemakers and implants are MRI-compatible, but some older devices are not. Our clinical team will review your medical history to determine whether an MRI is safe for you.

Prostate MRI, especially mpMRI, is one of the most accurate imaging methods available for detecting prostate cancer. It can often distinguish between harmless, slow-growing conditions and more aggressive tumours, helping to reduce unnecessary biopsies and improve diagnostic precision.

You may need a Prostate MRI if you have a raised PSA level, ongoing urinary symptoms or concerns about your prostate health. It is also recommended when previous imaging or biopsies have been inconclusive, or when your doctor wants to evaluate the prostate before or after treatment.

Your full radiologist report and digital scan images will be available within 3–5 working days.

A prostate MRI typically takes 30–40 minutes.

No GP referral is needed – you can self-refer or book directly.

Sometimes a contrast injection is required for clearer imaging. This will be discussed with you beforehand.

Yes. MRI scans are safe and do not use radiation.
