Why book this scan?
  • Confirm or rule out gallstones as the cause of your symptoms
  • Investigate pain under the right ribs or after fatty meals
  • Follow up abnormal liver function blood test results
  • Check for gallbladder polyps, sludge or wall thickening

  • Assess the bile ducts for signs of obstruction
  • Written report to share with your GP or surgeon

A gallbladder ultrasound is booked under Upper Abdomen Ultrasound in our online booking system. This covers the gallbladder and bile ducts alongside the liver, pancreas and spleen, so you get a full upper abdominal assessment rather than a single organ.

What your
Gallbladder Ultrasound includes

Each private gallbladder ultrasound at Vitalscan is a thorough assessment of the gallbladder, the bile ducts and the surrounding upper abdominal organs. A written report is produced following the scan and issued within 3 to 5 working days, for you to share with your GP, gastroenterologist or surgeon.

  • Assessment of gallbladder size, shape and position
  • Identification of gallstones, including number and size
  • Measurement of gallbladder wall thickness
  • Detection of biliary sludge
  • Assessment of gallbladder polyps, with size recorded
  • Evaluation of the common bile duct for dilation
  • Assessment of the liver, pancreas and spleen
  • Written report within 3 to 5 working days

When to book a Gallbladder Ultrasound

Gallbladder problems often produce symptoms that come and go, which is part of why they can take a long time to diagnose. A private scan gives you a clear answer without waiting. Common reasons to book include:

  • Pain under the right ribs, sometimes spreading to the right shoulder blade
  • Pain or nausea after fatty or heavy meals
  • Episodes of severe pain lasting from minutes to a few hours
  • Bloating, indigestion or a feeling of fullness
  • Abnormal liver function blood test results
  • Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Pale stools or unusually dark urine
  • A gallbladder polyp already identified that needs monitoring
  • Unexplained upper abdominal pain with no diagnosis

You do not need a GP referral to book. If your pain is severe, constant, or comes with a fever, seek urgent medical attention rather than booking a routine scan.

What does a Gallbladder Ultrasound show?

Ultrasound is the first-line test for the gallbladder and is more accurate than CT for finding gallstones. Sound waves pass easily through the bile inside the gallbladder, so stones and other changes show up clearly, in real time and without radiation.

Gallstones

Ultrasound detects gallstones with very high accuracy. The scan records how many stones are present, their size, and whether they are sitting in the gallbladder or have moved into the bile ducts. Many people have gallstones without symptoms, so the findings are always read alongside what you are experiencing.

Biliary Sludge

Sludge is thickened bile that collects when the gallbladder does not empty fully. It appears as a layer that shifts when you change position. It can cause the same symptoms as gallstones and sometimes precedes them.

Gallbladder Polyps

Polyps are growths on the gallbladder wall, and most are small and harmless. Size is what matters, so the report records it precisely. Smaller polyps are usually monitored with repeat scans, while larger ones are referred for a surgical opinion.

Gallbladder Wall Thickening

A thickened wall can indicate inflammation, either from a sudden episode or from long-term irritation by stones. The scan measures wall thickness and looks for fluid around the gallbladder.

Bile Duct Dilation

If a stone blocks the flow of bile, the ducts above the blockage widen. Measuring the common bile duct is a standard part of the scan and helps identify obstruction even when the stone itself is hidden.

Liver, Pancreas and Spleen

Because gallbladder problems affect the wider biliary system, the surrounding organs are assessed at the same time. This can pick up fatty change in the liver or other findings that explain your symptoms.

What a Gallbladder Ultrasound cannot show

Ultrasound shows the structure of the gallbladder very well, but it does not measure how well the gallbladder is emptying. Where poor gallbladder function is suspected and no stones are found, a different type of scan is needed. Small stones in the lower part of the common bile duct can also be difficult to see, because bowel gas sits in the way. If your symptoms strongly suggest a duct stone and the ultrasound is clear, an MRCP scan may be recommended. Your written report will outline the findings and recommend next steps where appropriate.

Considering a liver blood test?

Gallbladder problems often show up in liver function results, particularly when a bile duct is blocked. An ultrasound shows the structure, a blood test shows how the liver and biliary system are working. Many patients benefit from both. Vitalscan offers a dedicated liver health blood test from £75.

Understanding your Gallbladder Ultrasound results

Your written report is prepared by our clinical team following the scan and issued within 3 to 5 working days. It records what was found in the gallbladder, the bile ducts and the surrounding organs, and is written to be shared with your GP or a surgeon.

Gallstones are a common finding and do not always need treatment. If they are causing symptoms, the usual next step is a surgical opinion about removing the gallbladder. Polyps are typically monitored with a repeat scan rather than treated straight away. Your report will make clear whether a finding is likely harmless, needs monitoring, or warrants referral. If anything identified during the scan requires prompt attention, our team will contact you directly.

Paying for your Gallbladder Ultrasound

Private gallbladder ultrasound scans at Vitalscan are available on a self-pay basis at £150. We also work with a number of leading health insurance providers. Please contact us or check with your insurer to confirm whether your policy covers diagnostic ultrasound. Payment is required at the time of booking.

Gallbladder Ultrasound FAQs

What does a gallbladder ultrasound show?2026-09-28T14:23:51+00:00

A gallbladder ultrasound shows gallstones, biliary sludge, polyps and thickening of the gallbladder wall. It also measures the common bile duct to check for obstruction, and assesses the liver, pancreas and spleen at the same time as part of the upper abdominal scan.

Can an ultrasound detect gallstones?2026-09-28T14:24:37+00:00

Yes. Ultrasound is the most accurate test available for gallstones and is used as the first-line investigation. It identifies how many stones are present and their size, and can show whether a stone has moved out of the gallbladder into the bile ducts.

Do I need a GP referral for a private gallbladder ultrasound?2026-09-28T14:25:17+00:00

No. You can book a private gallbladder ultrasound at Vitalscan directly, without a GP referral. If you are unsure whether this scan is right for your symptoms, our team can talk you through it when you call and help you book the correct appointment.

Do I need to fast before a gallbladder ultrasound?2026-09-28T14:24:58+00:00

Yes. Fasting is required so that the gallbladder fills with bile and expands, which makes stones and wall changes far easier to see. Eating beforehand empties the gallbladder and can make the scan unreliable. Exact instructions are given when you book.

How much does a private gallbladder ultrasound cost?2026-09-28T14:25:38+00:00

A private gallbladder ultrasound at Vitalscan costs £150. This includes the scan, assessment by our clinical team, and a written report issued within 3 to 5 working days that you can share with your GP, gastroenterologist or surgeon.

What happens if gallstones are found?2026-09-28T14:25:57+00:00

Gallstones causing no symptoms are often simply monitored. Where they are causing pain or complications, the usual next step is a surgical opinion about removing the gallbladder. Your report will set out the findings so your GP or a specialist can advise on treatment.

Are gallbladder polyps serious?2026-09-28T14:26:13+00:00

Most gallbladder polyps are small and harmless. Size is the main factor, which is why your report records it precisely. Smaller polyps are usually monitored with a repeat scan after a set interval, while larger ones are referred for a surgical opinion.
