What your
Knee Ultrasound includes

Each private knee ultrasound at Vitalscan is a thorough assessment of the soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, and fluid around the knee joint. A written report is produced following the scan and issued within 3 to 5 working days, for you to share with your GP, orthopaedic surgeon, or physiotherapist.

  • Assessment of the patellar and quadriceps tendons

  • Medial and lateral collateral ligament assessment

  • Evaluation of the knee bursae
  • Assessment for joint effusion (fluid on the knee)
  • Baker’s cyst assessment (behind the knee)
  • Synovium and soft tissue evaluation
  • Iliotibial band assessment where relevant
  • Written report within 3 to 5 working days

When to book a Knee Ultrasound

A private knee ultrasound is suitable for anyone experiencing knee symptoms or recovering from a knee injury. Common reasons to book include:

  • Knee pain at the front, side, or back of the knee
  • Swelling or fluid around the knee joint
  • Suspected ligament injury (MCL or LCL)
  • Suspected bursitis or tendinopathy
  • Sports injury assessment or return to sport planning
  • A lump or cyst behind or around the knee
  • Clicking, locking, or giving way of the knee
  • Monitoring a previously identified knee condition
  • Unexplained knee stiffness or reduced range of motion
  • IT band syndrome or runner’s knee

You do not need a GP referral to book. If you are unsure whether a knee ultrasound is appropriate for your symptoms, our team can advise you when you call.

What a Knee Ultrasound can show

A knee ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the soft tissues surrounding the knee joint. It is particularly well suited to assessing tendons, ligaments, bursae, and fluid, providing fast and accurate information without radiation.

Tendons

The patellar tendon and quadriceps tendon are assessed for tears, thickening, or tendinopathy. These are common sources of anterior knee pain.

Ligaments

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) can be assessed for sprains or tears. These are frequent sports injuries.

Bursae

The scan can identify bursitis, where a bursa becomes inflamed and swollen, commonly at the front or below the kneecap.

Joint Effusion

Fluid within the knee joint is clearly visible on ultrasound and can indicate inflammation, injury, or an underlying condition such as arthritis.

Baker’s Cyst

A Baker’s cyst is a fluid-filled swelling behind the knee. Ultrasound is one of the most effective ways to identify and assess this common finding.

Soft Tissues

The iliotibial band, synovium, and surrounding soft tissues are assessed for thickening, inflammation, or other changes that may be contributing to symptoms.

What a Knee Ultrasound cannot show

Ultrasound is highly effective for soft tissue assessment but has limitations. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) sit deep inside the knee joint and are better assessed by MRI. The menisci and articular cartilage are also more fully evaluated on MRI. If your symptoms suggest internal joint pathology, your written report may recommend an MRI as a next step.

Would a Knee MRI be more appropriate?

If your symptoms suggest an ACL or PCL injury, meniscal damage, or significant cartilage changes, a knee MRI may provide more detailed information. Vitalscan offers private knee MRI scans from £375.

Understanding your Knee Ultrasound results

Your written report is prepared by our clinical team following the scan and issued within 3 to 5 working days. The report outlines the findings from each area assessed and is written to be shared with your GP, orthopaedic surgeon, physiotherapist, or sports medicine specialist.

If anything identified during the scan requires prompt attention, our team will contact you directly. Where further imaging such as an MRI is recommended, this will be clearly stated in the report with the reason why.

Paying for your Knee Ultrasound

Private knee ultrasound scans at Vitalscan are available on a self-pay basis at £150. We also work with a number of leading health insurance providers. Please contact us or check with your insurer to confirm whether your policy covers diagnostic ultrasound. Payment is required at the time of booking.

Knee Ultrasound FAQs

What does a knee ultrasound show?2026-06-29T09:14:22+00:00

A knee ultrasound shows the soft tissues surrounding the knee joint, including the tendons, ligaments, bursae, and fluid. It can identify tendon tears or tendinopathy, ligament injuries, bursitis, joint effusion, Baker’s cysts, and soft tissue inflammation. It is not the best tool for assessing the ACL, PCL, menisci, or articular cartilage, which are better evaluated by MRI.

Do I need a GP referral for a private knee ultrasound?2026-06-29T09:15:03+00:00

No. You can book a private knee ultrasound at Vitalscan directly, without a GP referral. If you are unsure whether this scan is appropriate for your symptoms, our team can advise you when you call.

How much does a private knee ultrasound cost?2026-06-29T09:18:17+00:00

A private knee ultrasound at Vitalscan costs £150. This includes the scan, assessment by our clinical team, and a written report issued within 3 to 5 working days.

What is the difference between a knee ultrasound and a knee MRI?2026-06-29T09:18:44+00:00

A knee ultrasound is fast, cost-effective, and excellent for assessing soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and bursae in real time. A knee MRI provides a more comprehensive view of the entire joint, including the ACL, PCL, menisci, and articular cartilage, which are not well visualised on ultrasound. If your symptoms suggest internal joint damage, an MRI may be recommended. Vitalscan offers both services.

Knee ultrasound is ideal for soft tissue assessment. MRI gives a fuller picture of the whole joint. Find out which is right for you, and book either at Vitalscan.

Can a knee ultrasound detect a torn ligament?2026-06-29T09:20:50+00:00

Yes, for the outer ligaments. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) are well visualised on ultrasound and can be assessed for sprains or tears. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) sit deeper within the joint and are better assessed by MRI.

Can a knee ultrasound detect a Baker’s cyst?2026-06-29T09:21:34+00:00

Yes. A Baker’s cyst is a fluid-filled swelling that forms behind the knee, and ultrasound is one of the most effective ways to identify and assess it. The scan can confirm the presence, size, and characteristics of the cyst.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for a knee ultrasound?2026-06-29T09:22:14+00:00

No special preparation is needed for a knee ultrasound. Wear or bring clothing that allows easy access to the knee. You can eat and drink normally beforehand.

Is a knee ultrasound safe?2026-06-29T09:22:51+00:00

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images and does not use radiation. It is a safe, well-established diagnostic tool used routinely across all areas of medicine.

How long does a knee ultrasound take?2026-06-29T09:23:35+00:00

Most knee ultrasound appointments at Vitalscan take around 20 to 30 minutes.
