What a Pelvic Ultrasound can show

A pelvic ultrasound uses sound waves to produce real-time images of the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and surrounding pelvic structures. It is one of the most effective first-line investigations for a wide range of gynaecological and pelvic conditions.

Uterus

The scan assesses the size, shape, and position of the uterus, as well as the thickness of the endometrial lining. This can help identify fibroids, polyps, endometrial thickening, or structural abnormalities.

Ovaries

Ovarian size, follicle count, and morphology are evaluated. The scan can identify simple or complex ovarian cysts, polycystic ovarian morphology, and ovarian masses that may need further investigation.

Endometrium

Measurement of the endometrial lining is particularly relevant in cases of irregular bleeding, post-menopausal bleeding, or when investigating fertility concerns.

Pelvic Fluid

The presence of free fluid in the pelvis can be relevant in a number of clinical contexts, including ruptured cysts or inflammatory conditions.

Bladder

Where clinically appropriate, the scan may include assessment of the bladder, particularly where bladder symptoms are part of the presenting complaint.

What a Pelvic Ultrasound cannot diagnose

A pelvic ultrasound provides detailed anatomical imaging but does not replace clinical assessment or laboratory testing. Some conditions, such as endometriosis, may not be directly visible on ultrasound and may require further investigation. Your written report will clearly state any findings and, where relevant, recommend next steps.

Understanding your Pelvic Ultrasound results

Clear, clinically written reports – within 3 to 5 working days.

Your written report is prepared by our clinical team following the scan and issued within 3 to 5 working days. The report outlines the findings from each area assessed and is written to be shared with your GP, gynaecologist, or other specialist.

If anything requires prompt attention, our team will contact you directly. The report can be shared digitally with any healthcare provider involved in your care.

Paying for your Pelvic Ultrasound

All ultrasound services offered by Vitalscan are self-pay only. We do not accept private medical insurance for these tests, and they cannot be claimed through your insurer. Payment must be made in full at the time of booking.

Pelvic Ultrasound FAQs

What is a pelvic ultrasound scan?2026-05-27T11:22:18+00:00

A pelvic ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging scan that uses sound waves to produce detailed images of the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and surrounding pelvic structures. It is a safe, non-invasive procedure commonly used to investigate pelvic pain, irregular periods, suspected fibroids, ovarian cysts, and other gynaecological concerns.

Do I need a GP referral for a private pelvic ultrasound?2026-05-27T11:23:15+00:00

No. You can book a private pelvic ultrasound at Vitalscan directly, without a GP referral. If you are unsure whether this scan is appropriate for your symptoms, our team can advise you when you call.

How much does a private pelvic ultrasound cost?2026-05-27T11:24:07+00:00

A private pelvic ultrasound at Vitalscan costs £250. This includes the scan, assessment by our clinical team, and a written report issued within 3 to 5 working days.

Can a pelvic ultrasound detect ovarian cysts?2026-05-27T11:30:50+00:00

Yes. Pelvic ultrasound is one of the primary methods for identifying ovarian cysts. The scan can determine the size, location, and characteristics of a cyst, which helps clinicians assess whether further investigation or monitoring is needed.

Can a pelvic ultrasound detect fibroids?2026-05-27T11:31:28+00:00

Yes. Uterine fibroids are typically clearly visible on pelvic ultrasound. The scan can identify the number, size, and location of fibroids within or around the uterus, which is important for assessing their impact on symptoms and fertility.

Can a pelvic ultrasound detect endometriosis?2026-05-27T11:32:08+00:00

Pelvic ultrasound can identify some features associated with endometriosis, such as endometriomas (ovarian cysts caused by endometriosis). However, it cannot directly visualise all forms of endometriosis, particularly superficial implants. A normal ultrasound result does not rule out endometriosis. If endometriosis is suspected, your report will indicate whether further investigation is recommended.

Do I need a full bladder for a pelvic ultrasound?2026-05-27T11:32:50+00:00

Arriving with a comfortably full bladder helps to improve image quality. You will be advised on preparation when you book. If you have any questions ahead of your appointment, please contact our team.

How long does a pelvic ultrasound take?2026-05-27T11:33:32+00:00

Most pelvic ultrasound appointments at Vitalscan take around 20 to 30 minutes.

Is a pelvic ultrasound safe?2026-05-27T11:35:06+00:00

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images and does not use radiation. It is a safe, well-established diagnostic tool used routinely across all areas of medicine.
