When to book an Early Pregnancy Scan

An early pregnancy scan is typically recommended from 6 weeks of pregnancy, when a fetal heartbeat can first be reliably assessed. Booking before this point may result in inconclusive findings, which can cause unnecessary anxiety.

Please note: Vitalscan offers early pregnancy scans from 6 weeks up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you are beyond 12 weeks, your GP or midwife can advise on the appropriate next steps for dating or anomaly scanning.

What an Early Pregnancy Scan can show

An early pregnancy scan uses ultrasound imaging to assess the uterus and the developing pregnancy in real time. At Vitalscan, findings are explained to you during your appointment, and a written report is issued within 3 to 5 working days.

Pregnancy location

Confirms the pregnancy has implanted correctly inside the uterus. This is clinically important because an ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside the uterus, requires urgent medical attention.

Fetal heartbeat

A heartbeat can usually be detected from around 6 weeks. A visible heartbeat at this stage is a positive indicator of a continuing pregnancy.

Gestational age

Measurements taken during the scan confirm how far along the pregnancy is and calculate an estimated due date. This is particularly helpful if your dates are uncertain.

Multiple pregnancy

The scan identifies whether you are carrying twins or more, which is important for planning your antenatal care pathway.

Uterus and ovaries

The surrounding structures are assessed for any changes that may be relevant to the pregnancy or require follow-up.

What is a viability scan?

A viability scan is another term for an early pregnancy scan carried out to confirm the pregnancy is developing normally. The term is commonly used to describe scans performed between 6 and 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The scan checks three key things: that the pregnancy has implanted inside the uterus, that a fetal heartbeat is present, and that development is consistent with the gestational age. All early pregnancy appointments at Vitalscan include a full viability assessment as standard.

All early pregnancy scans at Vitalscan are self-pay only. We do not accept private medical insurance for this service, and the cost cannot be claimed through your insurer. Payment of £175 is required in full at the time of booking.

Your scan takes place in a private consultation room with a ceiling-mounted screen for easy viewing. Both abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound are available where clinically appropriate, covered under the same appointment price.

Step 3

Immediate Assessment

Your scan is assessed by our clinical team and findings are discussed with you at the appointment. If anything needs further investigation, next steps are arranged without delay.

Step 4

Receive Your Report

A written report is issued within 3 to 5 working days. You can share this with your GP, midwife, or any specialist involved in your care.
